Upon completion, the F.J. Davey Home became one of the largest stand-alone Long Term Care Facilities in the province of Ontario.

This new three storey, 374 bed facility was designed with the residents’ needs in mind. The F.J. Davey Home is comprised of 12 residential areas with varying levels of care, complemented with the necessary ancillary support areas, worship space, community dining, hair salons and retail spaces. Despite the large scale of this building, the goal was to was to maintain a sense of home while promoting an active lifestyle and sustainability.

This was achieved through strategies such as daylighting, combined with the use of natural materials like wood and brick. These notions were further explored through an extensive programming analysis that included a survey of the pre-existing facility on site. The resulting building plan would feature a central core that would branch out into four wings, each of which would wrap to create inner courtyards. This layout not only created efficiency, but the redundancy created feelings of familiarity for the residents.
